Tomorrow is a big day for baseball fans across the nation. June 5th is the beginning of this year's MLB Draft, and many fans are eager to discover who will be joining their favorite teams and hopefully lead them to victory. However, many fans wonder: What are the rules regarding first year player drafts?
What is interesting about the MLB draft, and quite pleasant to fans of smaller and less popular teams, is that the team with the most losses gets first pick and then each team on down list gets to pick with the champions of last year being last to pick.
As far as where potential players can be from, the MLB is quite liberal in this regard. Players can be from any of the territories of the US. In addition, a player need only have been enrolled in a high school or college in the US, regardless of where they were born. As you can see, it is not terribly difficult for anyone from anywhere in the world to qualify to play in the MLB.
The catch is that a player cannot be currently enrolled in school. Only players who have graduated from high school and not yet attended college, college players who are in their final years of college, and players from junior college are allowed to be drafted.
Did You Know?
In 2012, a high school graduate by the name of Alfredo Escalera became the youngest person to ever get drafted into the MLB at the age of 17 years old.
